I served in youth and children’s ministry most of my adult life and served as a church pastor, helping whoever I could while serving the church members. It was always my desire to help people in whatever ways I could.

My wife and I have 9 children, and the most important people in the world to serve is my own family. As a dad, I feel that responsibility greatly. As I was serving in ministry, though, I didn’t make a lot of money. By God's grace, we squeaked by. Serving my family and the people in the church was the most important thing to me, not money.

About seven years ago, we had a series of family disasters with chronic illnesses, deaths of loved ones, and a forced move out of a big home into a tiny, two bedroom, one-bathroom house for all 11 of us. These disasters forced me to look at my lack of resources in a serious way. 

My sons were living in the garage of that small house and I had to find a way to get a side income going. I was smashed down by the weight of those challenges, and I knew that I had to find some way to make more income.

I had a picture in my head of the thing that represented why I needed to find other revenue streams. As bizarre as it sounds, that picture in my head was a toilet. We only had one toilet for all 11 of us, which meant a lot of patience (or impatience sometimes). I wanted to help my family. I wanted everyone to have a pot to poop in.

I'm a hard-working guy, so I started trying to figure out what I could do while still pastoring the church. I started by working diligently in a network marketing company, but I was really bad at that. Then, I tried several different online courses and did some freelancing online. I started making some side money, but I was working about 70 hours a week and I was still not making enough money. 

Then I learned about buying used books and selling them online, and I decided to give it a try. I had never owned my own business and I didn’t know anything about selling stuff online, but I decided to give it a go and learn what I could learn.

So I started buying used books online, from schools, and at library sales. I realized that this was a very profitable business, but I didn’t really have any plan or system in place. I had so many questions, and YouTube didn't help much, because there was so much outdated and flat out wrong information. 
 
The problem was that I was jumping from one tool to another, without any kind of cohesive plan that would help me direct my online bookselling business. I didn't have anyone to help me figure it all out. So, just to keep my head on straight, I began to make simple checklists. When I started to simplify the business into a logical sequence, I began to really grow.
 
I found that buying books from local libraries and other sources gave me a great return for my money, and I was only working on the business a few hours a week.

I didn’t have to spend a lot of money up front to grow the business, but within the first year, my Amazon book sales topped $100,000. Because of the book business, after about three years, I was able to buy a home for my family with plenty of room for everyone. We now have six toilets!
